Freelance Writing At Home – Is It Possible To Earn Online?

These days many people are trying to find ways to earn a living from home or supplement their income. Freelance writing at home is definitely a possibility. Mothers are choosing to work from home a lot more these days because of the price of day care and the bonus of spending more time with their families.

If you are able to write with excellent spelling and grammar skills and have a good command of the English language, then this may work for you. If you like writing about many different topics and you can type at fast speeds then you may be able to work at home in your pj’s or your comfortable clothes, like your favorite sweat pants. No more buying expensive designer clothes to wear to the office. If this appeals to you then freelance writing at home could be your cup of tea.

Whatever you decide to do, don’t kid yourself that this will be easy, because it won’t, it is hard work getting a career and business up and running from home and you will need to be motivated and focused if you are going to get there. There are rules to follow; like deadlines and writing guidelines, so it will be like you have a real job. You may feel as though you are working harder than when you had a full-time job outside the home. You need to be prepared to put in the hard work for the ultimate payoff.

You may receive feedback that you just do not want to hear, but this is a competitive industry and you need to take all and any rejections and negative feedback on the chin and get a thick skin if you are going to survive at being Freelance Writing. If you can make it work; it is really worth your time and effort.

Can I Succeed Writing From Home?

Writing from home is a career that many writers are undertaking, but you need to do your research. You will need to know which websites to apply to and what kind of money they pay. You will need to research pay rates and what you can expect to earn. You cannot just get on the computer without any knowledge and make money writing. There are many things you need to consider before starting. You will need privacy while you are working, so you need to set up a home office. You need to look into taxes and how you go about paying tax as a self employed earner. You will also need to know what jobs to avoid that are not worth taking on, this usually comes with time and experience.

Does Freelance Writing Pay Well?

If you have done your due diligence and researched which sites to write for then you can expect freelance writing to pay as well as a second job. Some people do this full-time and earn a full-time income from it and many quit their day jobs and focus on writing. It might replace your normal income and it might not. It depends on how much work you are getting and how much time you spend work on your writing career. Do not waste your time writing projects that you will not be paid for. This is a waste of time when you are trying to get an income flowing to you at home.

What Do I Need To Get Started?

Firstly you will need to set up your home office. It’s much better if this office is private and quiet, so that you can concentrate and you are not getting interrupted fifty times a day by your family. You will also need to enlist their support in understanding that you are working and need to be left alone until you knock off for the day.

You will need to organize a way to paid, which will involve setting up a Paypal account online and connecting it to your bank account. Most online writing sites pay via Paypal and it is the easiest method of getting paid. Don’t worry though if you don’t have one, they are easy to set up and it takes a few days to verify your account and connect to your bank. But, this is important because most sites will not pay writers unless they have Paypal.

Finally you will need to research what kind of work is available online and there are literally hundreds, perhaps even thousands of sites that you can write for. Once you have a list of sites to try in hand then go for it. You will not like every single site you join and you may not be accepted to all the sites you join, but just keep going and you will eventually get there.

You can also advertise on your site, once you have one to write for private clients. Your rates will need to begin on the low side, but once you have a few clients and your writing improves, you will able to charge more per article.

In my next post, I will be writing about websites where you can get paid upfront for writing articles and sites that share their revenue with writers. Stay tuned to my website for this post.

  1. Thank you so very much for this awesome post, freelancing is something i always wanted to get into, and i think that this post is enough for me to set up and get started. Thank you Janelle Coulton

  2. It is possible to make money from home writing freelance articles (I’ve been doing it since 2006), what I think is worth pointing out is that the majority of people who take part in freelance writing will be scratching at the bottom of the barrel for $1-$5 article assignments, it takes someone with a talented writer to get out of this level and earn the proper Dollars.

    1. It is very possible to make money writing article, but like you pointed out, you will only be getting peanuts for your articles.
